The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is a UK visa for recent graduates of top-rated global universities allowing the visa holder a 2-year visa with the freedom to live and work in the UK without sponsorship or endorsement.
Unlike other working visa routes in the UK, the HPI was introduced to attract global graduates to move to the UK to work, research, study and create startups. It's a straightforward visa routes that is an amazing gateway to the UK.
Valid for 2 years, the HPI is a visa that relies primarily on graduating from a qualifying global university. With finding sponsored employment in the UK notoriously difficult from overseas, the HPI visa has proven an amazing way to get a foot hold in UK employment or starting up a UK business that can then offer sponsorship.
The visa allows the visa holder to work without restriction and to even be self-employed and start their own UK business without the need for prior sponsorship or endorsement. Without the onerous visa costs of sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route, employers can employ HPI visa holders with no such costs or salary considerations.
The HPI visa route attracts graduates in technology, finance, research, engineering and consulting.
To be eligible, you must have:
A degree from as university on the Global Universities List, which doubled on 4 November 2025.
A degree obtained within the last 5 years.
English Language Requirement (B2 level)
The Global University List is updated each year. Since a person can have graduated in the last 5 years, each year of the list is available for the last 5 years so that a person can look at the list that applies to their year of graduation and see if their university was on the list in that year.
E.g. If I graduated from the City University of Hong Kong in July 2023, I can look up the 2022 list which details qualifying universities from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2023 where the universities are listed alphabetically.
On 4 November 2025, the list expanded significantly for anyone graduating between 1 November 2025 and 31 October 2026.
From 4th November 2025, the HPI visa will be capped at 8,000 applications per year.
Benefits:
No sponsorship required, meaning there is no need for a job offer before applying for a visa or for a company to cover the significant costs of sponsorship.
Flexibility to work for multiple employers, since sponsored work visas restrict workers to employment for their sponsor.
Limitations:
The visa is temporary (2 years, or 3 years for PhD graduates), meaning that it cannot be extended. At the end of the 2 years, you will need to switch into a different visa route or leave the UK.
Partners and minor children can also apply as dependents of the HPI visa, each also obtaining a 2-year visa (or less if applying after the main applicant has applied). Dependent visas also allow unrestricted employment rights and access to free healthcare and education.
