Call for evidence on proposals for 10-year indefinite leave to remain

Settlement in the UK is a permanent right to live and work in the UK.
In May, the government’s white paper on immigration rocked the idea of being settled in the UK in many ways.
The proposal on the table is that the eligibility period for indefinite leave to remain should be extended from five years to ten, perhaps even for those who are already on a five-year path to being settled.
Since the white paper, both the Reform and Conservative parties have proposed even cancelling settled status for those who already have it.
People who have been granted visas and settlement for meeting each condition of a particular visa route deserve to be assured that the basis of their permission to stay isn’t being rewritten.
The Home Affairs Select Committee have called for evidence on the government’s proposals and in light of this call for evidence, Migrate UK are preparing a submission to the committee in support of UK businesses.
The deadline for our submission is Tuesday 2 December 2025.
