Can I bring my spouse or partner to live with me in the UK?

Yes, you can apply for a UK Spouse or Partner Visa if you are a British citizen, settled in the UK, or have refugee or humanitarian protection. You’ll need to meet specific criteria, including financial requirements, English language ability, and evidence of a genuine relationship.

What are the financial requirements for a UK Spouse or Partner Visa?

You generally need to show a minimum annual income of £29,000 to sponsor a partner. Income can come from employment, self-employment, savings, or other permitted sources.

Can I apply to stay in the UK based on time spent living here already?

Yes, if you have lived in the UK for a significant period and have built strong personal or family ties, you may be eligible to stay under the private life route (under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights). This is particularly relevant for long-term residents and children born or raised in the UK.

How long does a UK family visa application take?

Processing times vary. Applications made from outside the UK usually take around 12 weeks, while in-country applications typically take 8 weeks or more. Priority and super priority services may be available for faster decisions.

How do I apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK?

You may apply for ILR after spending a qualifying period in the UK (usually 5 years on a family or private life visa). You must meet requirements including continuous residence, knowledge of English, and passing the Life in the UK Test.

Can I visit the UK to see family or friends?

Yes, you can apply for a Standard Visitor visa to visit family or friends in the UK for up to 6 months. You’ll need to show you intend to leave at the end of your visit and that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay amongst other requirements.

How can I become a British citizen?

To naturalise as a British citizen, you must usually have held ILR (or settled status) for at least 12 months, have lived in the UK for at least 5 years, and meet good character, language, and residency requirements. The process involves an application and a citizenship ceremony.
