UK Ancestry
The UK Ancestry Visa is a special immigration route for Commonwealth citizens (and certain British nationals) with a UK-born grandparent. It grants an initial 5-year permission to live, work, and study in the UK and can lead to permanent settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain, ILR). This visa allows you to move to the UK without needing a job offer if you meet the ancestry criteria.
What Is the UK Ancestry Visa?
The UK Ancestry Visa lets eligible Commonwealth citizens live and work in the UK for up to five years. No job offer or sponsorship is required, simply prove your ancestral link and show that you intend to work. During these five years, you have full work rights, including paid or voluntary roles, full- or part-time work, and self-employment. After five years, you may apply for ILR, which eventually opens the way to British citizenship.
Who Can Apply for a UK Ancestry Visa?
To qualify, you must meet all the following requirements:
- Citizenship: You must be a Commonwealth citizen (e.g., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India) or a British overseas citizen, British overseas territories citizen, or British national (overseas).
- Grandparent born in the UK: One grandparent must have been born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man (or in Ireland before March 1922). Step-grandparents or great-grandparents do not count.
- Age: You must be 17 or older on the date you travel to the UK.
- Intention to work: You must intend and be able to work in the UK. A specific job is not required, but evidence of work plans, skills, or experience is expected.
- Financial means: You must support yourself (and any dependants) without public funds.
- Application from abroad: You cannot switch to Ancestry while in the UK on another visa; you must apply from outside the UK.
If eligible, you and any dependants can apply up to three months before travelling to the UK. Within five years, you can extend the visa or apply to settle permanently (ILR).
Documents You’ll Need
Key documents for your application include:
- Passport or travel document
- Your full birth certificate showing your parents’ names
- Parent’s and grandparent’s birth certificates proving your lineage
- Proof of work intention, such as job offers, recruitment contacts, or a credible business proposal
- Financial evidence, e.g., bank statements (dated within 31 days of application) showing sufficient funds to support yourself and any dependants
Additional documents may include:
- Marriage or deed poll certificates if names have changed
- Adoption certificates if applicable
- TB test certificate if required
- Proof of relationships for dependants (marriage or civil partnership certificates, children’s birth certificates)
All documents must be in English or accompanied by certified translations.
How to Apply for a UK Ancestry Visa
Step 1 – Check Your Eligibility: Confirm you meet all criteria and have documented proof of your grandparent’s UK birth.
Step 2 – Gather Documents: Collect all required documents and certified translations if necessary.
Step 3 – Submit Application: Apply online via the UK Visas and Immigration website. Pay the visa fee (£682) and Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035 per year for adults; £776 per child). Dependants apply separately. Book a visa application centre appointment for biometrics and upload scanned documents before your appointment.
Step 4 – Biometrics & Decision: Attend your appointment to provide fingerprints, a photo, and original documents. Standard decisions usually take three weeks. Priority service (additional £500) typically takes five working days; Super Priority (£1,000) provides a next-day decision.
Once approved, you will receive a 5-year UK Ancestry visa. After five years, you can extend the visa or apply for ILR.
Fees and Processing Times
- Visa fee: £682 per person
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year (£5,175 for a 5-year adult visa; £3,880 for children)
- Application timeline: Apply up to three months before travel. Standard processing: 3 weeks outside the UK
- Priority & Super Priority services: £500 (5 working days) and £1,000 (next working day)
- Dependants: Pay the same visa fees, IHS fees differ depending on age.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Insufficient ancestry evidence: Provide official birth certificates for you, your parent, and grandparent. Replace lost documents before applying.
- Missing financial proof: Clearly show sufficient funds to support yourself and any dependants.
- Misunderstanding work requirement: No job offer is needed, but demonstrate realistic plans to work in the UK.
- Applying on the wrong visa: You cannot switch to Ancestry from within the UK.
- Continuous residence oversight: For ILR, avoid spending more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period.
- Other requirements: Comply with TB testing, adoption paperwork, and name-change documentation if relevant.
After You’re Approved
With a UK Ancestry visa, you can work, study, and travel freely in the UK. You may bring eligible dependants, use the NHS, and live in the UK for up to five years.
After five years, you can:
- Extend the visa for another five years, or
- Apply for ILR if you meet the 5-year continuous residence requirement.
ILR grants permanent rights to live and work in the UK, and after holding ILR for 12 months (and meeting other criteria), you may apply for British citizenship.
